In the Outsiders by S. E. Hinton the Greasers are like a surrogate family. The definition of surrogate is a substitute; a person filling in for someone. My definition of surrogate is a non- biological family member that replaces a family member. The gang treats each other like family. A lot of the greasers have parent problems. For example Johnny’s parents mentally and physical abuse him. Darry, Sodapop, and Ponyboy’s parents died in a horrible accident. Dallas’ parents kicked him out because he was getting into too much trouble.
In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton the gang is like family. Dallas looked over Johnny and gave him advice. Dallas helped Ponyboy and Johnny when Johnny killed Bob. Darry is like the father of Sodapop and Ponyboy. He goes to work pays for the bills and he jumps on Ponyboy if he does something wrong. He tells Ponyboy what’s right and what’s wrong. For example when Johnny is in the hospital and Ponyboy wants to smoke. Darry said no because he didn’t think Ponyboy should smoke.
In conclusion, I think the gang is like a surrogate family because they look out for each other. Dallas looks after Johnny, and Darry looks after SodaPop, Ponyboy and the rest of the gang.
